Netflix Que

Character: Macbeth

Netflix Que

The Arrow(Masculinity)

The plot of the Arrow is the story of a man who ship wrecked and was stranded on a Japanese Island for five years. His father survived the shipwreck also but late committed suicide so his son would have enough food to survive. His fathers final request was that his son would survive and return home to fix his faults. While on this island Oliver the main character met an Australian Army man who trained him to survive on the island and fight the threats that the island brought to him before he could return home because the island held many secrets that brought many dangerous people to the island. Once he returns home Oliver uses his newly skills to rewrite his fathers wrong doing. Oliver views what he is doing as very masculine because he is fixing his father's wrong doings as well as saving the city he calls home. This would be in Macbeth's Netflix que because Macbeth later in his plot has a strong focus on his masculinity and how needs to be perceived as an honorable man because he has now obtained all of this power. Macbeth and Oliver also relate very well because they both are trying to be honorable men but they both hide the secret of committing murder from the ones closest to them.  The struggle that Oliver faces to cope with the new power he has in the city and how he has to portray being masculine to those around him. Macbeth is very similar because he began to go insane but he has to portray himself as masculine to the people he rules.

The Flash(Supernatural)

The Flash is about a city where a partial accelerator explodes and it cause some supernatural changes to many of the citizens within the city. The main character of the show Barry Allen is changed by the explosion and given the power of super speed. Barry's mother was killed when he was young and she was killed by another speedster. The man that saves Barry from his coma he was in after the explosion turned out to be his competition. The man that killed his mother. Before Barry found out about Dr. Wells being his mom's murder Dr. Wells became Barry's best friend and mentor. Their relationship is much like the one between Macbeth and Banquo. Macbeth and Banquo were good friends just like Barry and Dr. Wells. Both Barry and Macbeth have to eliminate their friends to move on in their lives. The relation between the murders committed by Barry and Macbeth is the connection of the supernatural. Macbeth received the three apparitions from the Witches. These apparitions fueled Macbeth's plot to have his best friend killed so he would not have competition for the throne. The supernatural was also the fuel behind Barry's desire to find his mother's murder and it was responsible for him getting his powers. Also Dr. Wells is not actually Dr. Wells. It is a speedster from the future who is posing as Dr. Wells and he used the supernatural forces to travel through time. The influence the super natural has on the life of Barry is why Macbeth would have this show in his que because he can relate to it so easily because the supernal has a big influence on his life.

Once Upon A Time(Appearance vs. Reality)

Once Upon A Time is a show where there is an alternate would where all the fairy tale characters live. That world has a connection with our world. All the characters are trapped in our world because the Queen put an evil curse on everyone so no one can remember their past except for the Queen. The characters that are trapped find out that they are actually fairy tale characters trapped on our earth. They have to appear to be normal humans on earth. In reality they are actually fairy tale characters that need to return home. This is much like Macbeth because Macbeth has to appear to be a honorable man and king to his subjects. However no one knows his secret that in reality he is a murder and he has killed Duncan and had his best friend Banquo murdered to ensure that he would become the Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth would enjoy this show because he can relate to the fairy tale characters that have to appear as normal humans but in reality they live a different life as fairy tale characters and Macbeth lives a life of a murderer but has to appear as an honorable king.

House of Cards(Ambition)

Macbeth and Frank are very related in with their ambition for power. Frank often mentions that desires power more than money. Macbeth has a large desire for power over other possessions in life. Macbeth and Frank are similar in their desire for power because it controls much of their life. They want power more than they want anything else in their life. They both also don't like people who do not desire power more than other possessions. The two also relate in how they are willing do anything it takes to gain the power they so greatly desire. Whether that means being deceiving or killing those who get in their way. Macbeth would really enjoy this show because him and Frank are almost identical in their desire for power and how they will not let anything get in their way till they obtain that power.

Witch-slapped: Macbeth's fall from grace

Question 1

In christianity a  person takes steps into evil by conforming to their earthly desires. I am a religious person and I agree with that statement to a great extent. I believe someone takes the first step into evil when they take actions to please their worldly desires. It is much like eve did when she was tempted by the devil in the garden to eat the fruit. At baptism a christian is relieved of their original sin. Once a person takes action to please their worldly desires they have taken the first step of evil which is sin.

I believe that this is related to Macbeth and his earthly desire to obtain power and become king. He takes the step into evil in conforming to the manipulation of Lady Macbeth into murdering Duncan. This leads him further into evil by later having Banquo murdered and trying to have Fleance murdered. All of Macbeth's actions lead to him entering evil.

Macbeth's consequence of taking the step into evil leads to him going mad. In my case taking the step of conforming to my earthly desires leads to me committing sin. Macbeth's actions correlate to the sin I commit in my life. However the consequences I face from sin do not lead to me going mad, they affect my relationship with God.

#IBMakingArt

Creator: Unkown
The Cloisters Cross
Made of Walrus Tusk
22 5/8 x 14 1/4 in.

The Cross was created in England during the 12th century.  It is called the Cloisters Cross. It is made of walrus tusk. The four parts of the cross were created separately then put together to make the final piece. Their are interact engravings all throughout the four pieces of the cross. At this time in England Catholicism was growing at a large rate. This meant the Judaism was losing its popularity and began to have a bad public view within the country. The piece of art uses the style of carving to convey its main message. The main message and purpose of this cross is to attack Judaism. This is shown through the various carvings that are incorporated into the walrus tusk. Although the art was originally in multiple pieces the pieces were put together to form a cross. A very prominent symbol within Catholicism. This symbol provided a focus for the followers of Catholicism. This piece of art played a very vital role within England during the time period. It was a tangible piece of Catholicism that followers of the religion could hold in their hand. The carvings incorporated into the work are much like ones that Catholics would come across within Cathedrals. This cross gave them something they could hold in their hands. This was important because it helped promote Catholicism but also represented the hatred for Judaism through the carvings on the cross. The hatred for Judaism is very present during England at this time. The hatred is highlighted by the push to expel all Jews from the country, which was eventually reached at the end of the 13th century.

Deadly Sins in Ads

Author: Gatorade
Date: Released September 16, 2015
Publication: Released on YouTube

Denotative Examination:
This video was created for the purpose to be used as a video advertisement by Gatorade prior to videos being watched by YouTube users. It was created to promote the virtual experience that Gatorade created to show what it is like to be Bryce Harper at bat in the bottom of the 9th inning with the game on the line.

Connotative Examination:
I think that this video ad uses two deadly sins within it. One relating to the athlete Gatorade chose to use in creating the virtual experience as well as one when trying to reach viewers. The deadly sin that is represented within this ad by Bryce Harper would be pride. Bryce Harper is a very prideful athlete who is very skilled but also very cocky at the same time due to such a great career that he is having. I think Gatorade is trying to reach consumers that are envious of Bryce Harper himself or envious of the pro career that Bryce Harper has as a baseball player. Gatorade can really benefit from this add by targeting the envy within the viewers because they associate their name with such a great athlete and these envious consumers will want to be like Bryce Harper so they will participate within the virtual experience as well as purchase Gatorade products because Bryce Harper uses them.

Intended Audience:
I believe the intended audience of this advertisement from Gatorade are baseball fans more specifically Washington National and Bryce Harper fans. These Washington National and Bryce Harper fans have pride for their team as well as Bryce Harper specifically because he is there star player. Another intended audience would be viewers who are envious of Bryce Harper's career and achievements because they were never able to achieve them and don't play the game anymore or they aspire to be like him in the future. For kids that aspire to be like Bryce Harper Gatorade can really benefit from those viewers because they will be more likely to consume their products because Bryce does and they want to be like Bryce. However for viewers who can no longer be like Bryce might have a bad taste in their mouth from this ad because they can no longer be like them so they are less likely to purchase Gatorade's products. However they could want their children to be like Bryce Harper so they might purchase Gatorade's products for their children so they can hopefully be like Bryce Harper.

What's in a name?

I think for certain people their names carry great importance for them and then for other people I think their nick names carry great importance for them. I find that both my nickname and my first name define me. My first name defines me greatly because having an identical twin you want to be known by your name. You do not want to be known as "hey twin", "Moody", "Matt or Mike". I personally want to be known by my name. I think thats just my want to be different from my brother in some senses, my name being the start of that. I think my nickname also defines me because everyone of my good friends calls me by it and I think it represents my funny and joyful characteristics. My nickname "Hewbert" was given to me by my girlfriend and she got it from the HEW in the end of my name. All my friends started calling me it after she started to and it has stuck with me for a good while. I think that nicknames define some people more than others because they are usually given to someone by their peers. I think nicknames really define people that look for acceptance from their peers. I think that names define those people that look for acceptance within themselves and have individuality and your name is part of your individual.

I think there have been multiple times in my life where I have had two roles within in one situation. One major situation in my life were I was "two" was freshman year when the tennis team was in the state championship. Tennis is an individual sports. You play singles by yourself. When playing team tennis every win adds a point to your teams score. So you have to win to add a point. During the state championship I was playing two roles. I was being a member of the team trying to add a point to our scoreboard. I was also trying to win for myself. Another example of where I have been "two" in my life is in my church community. I go to church to grow closer in my relationship with God but I am also a member of the church community that is their to praise and thank God. I think trying to be an individual and also be a part of something as whole can sometimes be difficult. You have to keep your personal agenda at the front of your mind but your also trying to keep the agenda of the whole in your mind too. That why I think that when you are part of something as a whole it needs to have the same agenda as your personal agenda. In my case for tennis the team wanted to win and I wanted to win so I benefited the team by winning and the whole team benefited because we won the state championship. In the sense of the church I want to grow stronger with God and so does the rest of the church community. The agenda of the whole lined up with my personal agenda in these two cases.

Wing Young Huie Photo Analysis

picture link: http://goo.gl/yAaz6U
Wing Young Huie - Man in a Barber Shop - We Are the Other (2012-2013)

The initial examination of this picture from Huie you can see that an African American man is in a barber shop. He is getting his hair cut by another African American man who is also an African American. You can tell this because it looks like that man that is sitting down is wearing a smock while the other man looks like he could be holding hair clippers and trimming the mans hair.

There is a stereotype that African Americans in general take their hair very seriously and can spend a lot of time at the barber shop or hair salon. Knowing this and looking deeper at the picture deeper I believe Huie took this picture intending to try and represent the community within a barber shop between the barbers and their clients that is often seen within African American barber shops or hair salons. Although I think similar communities exist within all barber shops and hair salons it is commonly believed that it is a very strong community within African American barber shops and hair salons. I think Huie is trying to show this community feel in a positive light through this photo by showing the client as comfortable and the barber being focused and caring about his client because he is a member of their strong knit community.

I believe that both Atwood and Huie both use the concept of "othering" in their work. "Othoring" being defined as the portrayal of a group as different. Huie does this by representing different groups in the positive light. In this picture representing African Americans in their barber shops or hair salons and how they spend a lot of time and money within them. Atwood does it differently with The Handmaids's Tale than Huie does in his photographs. Atwood does it by creating different social classes within a dystopian style story. One specific social class being the handmaid's. Handmaid's within the story have many limitation that make them different from others within society. Handmaid's are the fertile women of society that are used to grow the population. Handmaid's have limitations on common things like not being able to read or write, being forced to live in seclusion, and more. This shows how Atwood and Huie both use "othering" in their work but in very different ways.
